Guidance on the Performance Review of Executive Leaders in School Trusts

10 June 2022

CST, BlueSky and Browne Jacobsen develop guidance for the Trust Executive Performance Review

We are pleased to announce the release of a new piece of guidance, The Performance Review of Executive Leaders: Understanding the Challenge; Winning Hearts and Minds which has been developed in partnership with the Confederation of School Trusts (CST) and Browne Jacobson, experts in education HR and law.

The process of Executive Performance Review within a school trust is important because it allows the trust board and executive leaders to develop clear objectives that align with the trust's strategic priorities. It creates a well-defined framework for the trust's Chair and Executive Leader to work together to ensure accountability and provide support to help them succeed.

This guidance piece sets out the purpose of the executive performance review and helps Trustees to prepare a robust process by understanding the challenge, identifying the resources needed to support the process and building the strong relationships required for success.

Overview

The performance review of the CEO or Executive Leader of a school trust is one of the Board's most significant responsibilities. It is key to the Board's leadership of strategy and values, its accountability for educational outcomes and financial health, and supports the development and well-being of the trust's most senior employee.

School trusts have the freedom to define their own appraisal process for Executive Leaders in line with their trust's ethos and values and approach to performance management.

Understanding the Challenge; Winning Hearts and Minds, is the first in a series of three guidance notes on the performance review of Executive Leaders for trust Boards, designed to provide robust sector and role specific guidance on the principles and practices of executive performance review to support a trusts' process from end-to-end, whatever its size or stage of development.

The guidance has been published by CST and can be accessed here: THE PERFORMANCE REVIEW OF EXECUTIVE LEADERS: UNDERSTANDING THE CHALLENGE; WINNING HEARTS AND MINDS - JUNE 2022
