Hatred, Self-Harm and Young People
King Alfred's A Specialist Sports College
Date:Tuesday 06 March 2012 Time:9.30am - 4pmCourse description
What exactly is hatred? Is it normal? Is it evil? What do young people mean when they say ‘I hate you’ and ‘I love you’? How should we respond? And what about our own feelings as professionals confronted with all this? How much do we love and hate the young people we work with? This workshop will be about how best to understand and respond to young people’s hatred. We’ll explore some theoretical understandings of how hatred and love emerge, how they become split and how young people might find a way of living with both feelings. We’ll share our experiences as professionals and practise ways of working effectively with the young people who confront us with such strong feelings.
This workshop will also be an opportunity to become better informed and more confident in responding to incidents of deliberate self-harm. It will look at what exactly young people do, why they do it, what’s most helpful for those who are self-harming and what the responsibilities of professionals might be.
This workshop is for professionals who work closely with young people in education, social services, mental health, youth justice….Training Facilitator
